Why make your own yogurt?

Once you learn to appreciate the goodness of yogurt and want to make it a daily habit for your family to eat yogurt, you would want to make your own yogurt.

There are many advantages if you make your own yogurt at home.  For one, there is no added harmful sugar, additives and preservatives.  And, it will be much more economical in the long-run.

You can be creative with your home-made yogurt and add in fresh fruits like banana, mango, papaya, etc., which you run through the mincer or your Alpha Juicer.  Yogurt can be delicious and healthy if you mix with it a tablespoon of flaxseed oil.

There's the conventional and lengthy way of making yogurt and there's the easy way to make it with NewLife Yogurtmaker.

To make yogurt, you will need "good" bacteria to begin.  You can get the yogurt starter (which comes in powder form) from your local supermarket.  Remember to read the labels and be sure there's a mention of "live cultures".  Get the plain ones so that you can put in your own natural flavoring.

Alternatively, you can also use store-bought plain yogurt the first time.  After that, you can use some of your fresh home-made yogurt as starter for your next batch of yogurt, but be sure to use it within 5-7 days to ensure the good bacteria count.

Step 1:  Mix the following well:
(1) 1 cup of hot distilled water to 3 cups of distilled water at room temperature;  (2) 12 large heaped tablespoons of cow/milk/soya milk powder.

Step 2:  Use a muslin cloth or coffee sieve to sieve the above mixture into the Yogurtmaker container.  If you like your yogurt to have a fine texture, then sieve it another time.

Step 3:  Scoop out 2 tablespoons of the liquid milk into a glass.  Put in a packet of yogurt culture (starter) and stir until dissolved.

Step 4:  Return the 2 tablespoons of the liquid milk into the Yogurtmaker container and stir.

Step 5:  Cover and turn on the Yogurtmaker.  No temperature control necessary.

Step 6:  Yogurt will be ready in about 5.5 to 6 hours.  You can let it incubate up to 10 hours depending on how tart you like it to be, or how much beneficial bacteria you wish to have.  Turn off the Yogurtmaker and leave yogurt to cool.  Store in fridge.  It will keep for up to one or two weeks.

Special tips

  • Put your yogurt into the freezer to cool, prior to moving it into the fridge.  This will result in a smoother consistency.

  • If you use skim or non-fat milk, also add in some non-fat dry milk powder for a creamier and thicker texture.

  • Add the optional flavorings to your fancy, or make smoothies with it.  Some ideas: fruits, jams, maple syrup, ice cream fudge, flaxseed oil.
