I had stomach cancer. My stomach was removed. After the surgery I lost 50lb. In order for me to gain weight, my oncologist told me I have to eat only high calories foods. No salads and juices. What is your opinion?
Sara says:Dear Arkady, I don't know the actual situation in your case, neither am I in the position to advise against your oncologist. But I can tell you my opinion from a nutritionist point of view.
Stomach cancer (or most other types of cancers for the matter) develops in the first place, BECAUSE of lack of salad and juices. Of course there are other reasons that lead to cancer, but this is ONE of the reasons.
Salad (fresh vegetables) and juices are the life-giving foods that provide your body with the fiber, vitamins and minerals that our body needs. There are also the enzymes, phytonutrients, anti-oxidants, etc. in plant foods. To deny your body of these foods is to deny your body LIFE.
I don't know what type of weight you want to gain, whether it be muscles, water or fats. But I hope it's not fats that you want. To a certain extent, fats are necessary but more than that, fats are actually a storage for toxins in the body and I know I don't need that.
With regards to eating high calories foods, again, I would think the quality of the food is far more important than the calories.
Example:You can get identical twins and have one consume 2000 calories a day of fruits and vegetables and the other twin consume 2000 calories a day of beer and donuts. One will get fat, while the other will not. Calories and nutrition and weight gain have very little correlation.
Just my two cents.
