To improve eye health

Dear Sara, my 19-year-old son has a degenerative eye condition and he is supposed to avoid vitamin A. We have started juicing because the green vegetables are so good for his eyes. But we want to avoid fruits and vegies that are high in vitamin A. What should we avoid?
Sara says:Dear Rebecca, vitamin A is a vitamin that is needed for eye health. However, what you want probably isn't vitamin A but the "precursor" vitamin A that you can obtain in the form of beta-carotene from carrots and other orange-reddish colored fruits/vegetables.
Precursor vitamin A will be converted into the vital vitamin A that your body (and your eyes) need, in the right amount at the right time. One doesn't get overdose on beta-carotene, but one may get overdose on vitamin A. Big amount of vitamin A taken over time can be toxic and taxing to the liver (this is usually taken in the form of synthetic supplements).
One other very important ingredient for eye-health is high anti-oxidant. Most fruits/vegetables are high with anti-oxidant content, with most found in berries and pomegranates. Try bilberries and goji juices (which you can also purchase from your healthstore) for their high anti-oxidant content that helps improve eye health.
During this time, please avoid processed foods and deep fried/oily foods that are rather damaging to eyesight, especially to those who have eye problems.
