Smoothies To Purify And Detox

Smoothies to rid your body of toxins,
purify and cleanse towards a healthier new you.

Detoxification (or "detox" for short) is a common word nowadays where more and more people begin to realize the importance of eliminating toxic substances or toxins from the body.

A detoxification diet, or in this case, juicing diet, can help remove some or most toxins from your body.  The amount of toxins being eliminated depends on how much cleansing food is being consumed and how much toxins are being prevented to enter the body during a given timeframe.

We cannot totally avoid toxins from entering our body, but we can prevent a large amount of it.  Read about it in more detail in the anti-oxidant page.  But briefly, they enter in many ways:

  • Air pollution

  • Pollution in our food and water

  • Excessive sunlight

  • Poultry products

  • Medications and drugs

  • Excessive stress

  • Excessive exercise

Fruit/vegetable juices are natural detoxifiers as they provide rich nutrients and  anti-oxidants that are necessary to cleanse, heal, repair and nourish the body.  The abundance of enzymes and fibers in fruits and vegetables increase the ease of toxin elimination.

After a disciplined detox juicing diet, people usually report improved energy, clearer skin, improved digestion and increased concentration and clarity of mind.

Here are some easy to prepare smoothies that are natural detoxifiers.  Also read about the healthy ingredients that you can add into your smoothies.

While the following recipes are generally safe for pregnant and nursing mothers, they should not attempt to follow a strict detoxification diet.  Other groups of people who must not follow a detox diet are people who are anemic, have eating disorder, diabetic, have kidney disease, autoimmune disease, thyroid disease, cancer, terminal illnesses and other chronic conditions.

It is important that you consult your physician before you embark on any detoxification program.

Detox Tips

  • During detox, try to eat a generous amount of garlic, onions and leeks.  These foods are excellent sources of sulfur compounds that help in detoxification.

  • Avoid alcohol, tobacco, sugar and caffeine during periods when your liver is under stress.  These substances can quickly deplete your body's natural detoxifiers.

  • It is important to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water when following a detox diet.  This helps the kidneys to flush out the toxins from your body.

  • Exercise releases the excess toxin through sweat and burns toxin-storing body fats.  (But beware, excessive exercise may also cause toxin build-up.)

There may be some minor reaction when you are detoxing.
