Metabolism Makeover
Interview (Part 3a)

Exclusive interview between
Juicing-for-Health.com
and
Expert Nutritionist, Yegyan,
who specializes in difficult weight loss

Question # 10:
Since you mainly focus on weight loss, how do you start with juicing for weight loss?

Yegyan:

I use specific questionnaires to find out what health imbalances a person have first and try to isolate that. Then I design a program to resolve that imbalance. That imbalance is what is holding back their weight loss.

Juicing is part of restoring their health.  I often suggest to juice organic vegetables that are highest in moisture content, where possible.

My book has a list of 200 foods listed in order of moisture level.  Another way of evaluating foods to juice for weight loss, is to look for lists of alkaline foods. These are foods that cause the pH of your body to rise.

When you get a list of foods that are alkaline-forming and compare that with moisture level, it is very similar. It is just easier to find alkaline foods lists.

The key is to look for foods that are very mineral-rich and as organic as possible.

You also want to choose vegetables and fruits that are low in sugar.  Sticking to the alkaline foods list is naturally going to do this because sugar lowers the pH of your body.

By taking more and more these types of foods, you will start the process of reversing the internal barriers that prevent weight loss.

It is not the whole solution but it is how juicing can be used.  Slowly increasing the ratio of these foods compared to acidic foods you eat will help you to start losing weight.

Ultimately, almost all my clients will do a liquid diet where there is only raw foods that are very high in moisture level. This lasts for at least two weeks.  It gives the liver a chance to rest and release a lot of its congestion.

My clients do this only when they are ready. For some, it can take months to get to that point.  For others, they just jump into it.  Fasts like this are extremely helpful in restoring and resetting the metabolism, when used in conjunction with the whole method.

Question # 11:
Why do some people gain weight when they start drinking juice?

Yegyan:

This occurs on occasion when people are experimenting with juicing.  There are only two reasons I have seen where this occurs:

The first reason is that the foods used to juice contain too much sugar.  They are getting benefit by getting enzymes and lack of the problems associated with cooked food. Some people, when they juice, end up consuming more sugar then before they started juicing!  Sugar, by and large, will cause fat storage.

The other reason is because of a glandular problem or hormone imbalance. Hypothyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism, causes myxedema, which is a form of fluid retention beneath the skin and in body cavities.

Adrenal fatigue or excess cortisol is another hormone or glandular imbalance that causes water retention depending on the severity.

In both cases, there is a predisposition to retain fluids.

It is usually the adrenal fatigue or excess cortisol situation that causes weight gain with introducing juicing.

If a person has excess cortisol or adrenal fatigue, they need to increase the amount they eat and increase frequency in order to lose weight, especially protein.   Being hungry and starving will cause more cortisol to be released because hunger is a form of stress on the nervous system. Sugar for them will cause quick water retention so juicing with high sugar foods will cause weight gain.

Sticking to the green vegetables is always a safe way to go.  Missing these hormone imbalances is a major source of weight loss frustration.

Question # 12:
You say that sipping juice is better than gulping it. How come?

Yegyan:

Yes, gulping any liquid will reduce absorption.  It will fill up the bladder and move through the elimination tract quickly.

Your body will have a rate of how fast it will use nutrients.  After exercise for example and after sleep there is a faster rate.

If you juice or use high nutrient liquids to drink, sip it. When you gulp it, you will see that you have to urinate more.  When you sip it, you don’t have to urinate as much.  It is interesting.

Question # 13:
What are different ways to store juice?

Yegyan:

The ideal situation is to drink your juices fresh and right away.

The enzymes released from the cells (especially if you use a centrifugal juicer) will oxidize and change their chemical structure when exposed to oxygen.  With some foods, the enzymes will become inactive very quickly when exposed to oxygen.

So technically, it is best to consume it soon after juicing.

But now, enter real life ...

The benefit of juicing is that the cells of the food you are juicing are opened up and the contents are available to your cells right away.  Raw fruits and vegetables have a high degree of micronutrients - vitamins, minerals, enzymes and trace  minerals.

Even if you do not take the juice right after juicing, you will still get some benefits by storing the juices in a container in the fridge and drinking it throughout the day.

They contain organic minerals and these are incredibly important to enabling your metabolism to run efficiently. If you want to store juice for longer, juice lemon with it.  Use an air-tight container that blocks out light, fill it to the brim to prevent oxygen that oxidize.  Do not keep more than 24 hours in the fridge.
