Juicing is a waste!?

Hi Sara, after reviewing your site, I purchased the Samson 6-in-1 single gear juicer. I juiced 2 organic carrots and 2 organic apples. It appears that the pulp represents 70% of the total content and the juice 30%. My questions for you are the following:

1) What percentage of enzymes and nutrients is contained in the juice versus the pulp that I am throwing away?

2) Why do they always recommend eating a whole fruit including the skin (after washing it of course) as opposed to juicing it?

3) Is the Samson single gear juicer of poor quality in the sense that it leaves the pulp moist and does not extract the maximum amount of juice from the fruit pieces?

My wife thinks that the whole idea of fruit juicing is a waste.

Sara says:

Hi Yashong, thank you for your questions. Every now and then I get an email like yours. All these questions have been addressed on my site but I will pull them together for you again here.

First of all, my site is about "juicing for health". Though eating fruits and vegetables have their own benefits, I'm promoting "juicing" for the purpose of rebuilding health, maintaining health and preventing diseases through the highest quality nutrition found in nature's provision -- fruits and vegetables.

Now, the answer to your questions:

Question # 1
What percentage of enzymes and nutrients is contained in the juice versus the pulp that I am throwing away?

I'm assuming this question refers to the pulp expelled using your Samson 6-in-1. I cannot tell you exactly the percentage. However, because your Samson is using a masticating method, it is able to minimize the agricultural chemicals and pesticides contained in your produce. This alone is a good reason to juice, to reduce ingestion of harmful chemicals when you don't use organic produce. But looking at the pulp that is expelled (picture above), I would say we get quite a good big percentage of the enzymes and nutrients out of it.

Another reason for juicing is for best absorption of the quality nutrients at our cellular level. Ponder: how many pounds of carrots do you need to eat in order to obtain the optimum level of nutrients needed for your body? In Dr Norman Walker's (the "guru of juicing") research, he found that our bodies are only able to absorb a very small percentage of beta carotene for example, if we were to eat a carrot. But by drinking a cold-pressed juice (or masticating in this case), our bodies are able to absorb nearly 100% of the beta carotene. So, it doesn't really matter the percentage left over in the pulp or in the juice. What we want to achieve here is best absorption of quality nutrients to fully hydrate and nourish our cells that have been so deprived of nutrients due to our very toxic environment.

Question # 2:
Why do they always recommend eating a whole fruit including the skin (after washing it of course) as opposed to juicing it?

Eating the whole fruit or vegetable is to be encouraged. I'm not advocating you to juice only. We need the fiber provided through whole fruits and vegetables, but remember to eat organic as much as possible. Consider my explanation in question 1 above about the residues in inorganic produce, or read how to minimize intake of harmful chemicals. Note that by washing, you're only removing the harmful toxins on the surface. Agricultural chemicals may be deeply embedded in the fibers of the produce.

My site is about "juicing for health", therefore, I am not emphasizing on "eating", though eating whole fruits and vegetables for fiber is important too.

Question # 3:
Is the Samson single gear juicer of poor quality in the sense that it leaves the pulp moist and does not extract the maximum amount of juice from the fruit pieces?

I personally own an equivalent model of the Samson 6-in-1, a Matstone Juicer. The pulp result is also shown in picture above. Depending on which model you're comparing the quality with, I wouldn't say that the Samson is of poor quality. It is a lower range of the single-gear juicers (one of the earliest models).

When comparing a Samson 6-in-1 single gear juicer with a centrifugal juicer, the Samson easily wins hands down. If you've used a centrifugal juicer before, you would be able to see the big difference.

When comparing with a twin-gear juicer like the Green Power Kempo (see picture above), the pulp expelled with the Samson is not as dry. But of course the Green Power costs more than double the price of the Samson 6-in-1. In other words, you get what you pay for.

Finally and unfortunately, there are many people out there who do think that juicing is a waste (of money, time and effort). I'm not here to convince anyone but to just share how juicing is so important in hydrating our deprived cells with nature's highest quality enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. These can best be achieved through safe juicing (i.e. using the masticating method). Drinking the right juices can help detoxify, hydrate, repair damaged cells, heal and nourish.

I hope the above answer your questions. Please also read in more detail:

The basics of juicing - see the section on "Why Juice?"

Vegetable juicing - why we need the life-giving chlorophyll from vegetables and how best to obtain them.

The importance of enzymes and phytonutrients, best obtained through masticating juicing.

is juicing a waste
by: Joan in Colorado

I use the leftover pulp from whatever I'm juicing in my salads. That way nothing is wasted.
