I like to lift weights and build muscles. Do I need animal protein?

by Ray
(Las Vegas)

I enjoy strength training and bodybuilding ... but I feel sluggish when I eat so much protein. Can I refrain from animal protein and still maintain and build quality mass?

Sara says:

Hi Ray, there seems to be a lot of myths surrounding protein and a protein diet. You do need protein for muscles building, but only a very small quantity as your intelligent body can recycle about 95% of the body's protein.

Moreover, it is the quality of the protein that is important. It has to be protein that your body can absorb. Animal protein gets coagulated when it's heated up by cooking. This renders the protein unusable by your body and stays in the blood, causing acidity=toxicity and thickening of the blood.

Your feeling sluggish when you eat too much protein is due to the wrong type of proteins you've been eating. See this page for other symptoms of eating the wrong kinds of proteins that are not usable by your body. I suggest you gradually change your source of proteins to plant proteins, but bearing in mind never to overdo it. It doesn't mean that more protein would build more muscles.

Please go to this page to learn more about amino-acids that are the building blocks of protein, how much protein you need, and suggestions on good sources of plant protein.

Happy muscles-building!!
