How To Make Almond Milk

Step-by-step guide to making your own
delicious and nutritious almond milk.
Save money and improve your health
at the same time.

Making almond milk is really simple, and is a very healthy substitute to using cow's milk.  Of course the taste and texture are different, but you will soon enjoy the taste of almond milk.

Almond milk is low in fat and rich in calcium, vitamins A, B2 and D.  It contains anti-cancer properties, rich in healthy oils that prevent heart diseases, boost brain function and is effective in regulating your blood sugar level.

Preparing the almonds

There are two types of almond - sweet and bitter.  Be sure you get the sweet variety which is longer and narrower than the bitter variety which is shorter and broader.

If you can easily purchase skinned roasted almond, it will definitely save you much time.  If not, here's how you do it:

To remove the almond skin, pour boiling water over it in a big bowl and leave aside for about four to five minutes.  Drain the water.  Squeeze and rub the almond between your thumb and fingers and the skin will easily come off.

Blot dry the almonds with lots of paper towels, then toast them in the oven at 325oF (165oC) for about 10 minutes.

When the roasted almonds are cooled, place one part almonds to four parts of filtered water in an air-tight glass jar.  Refrigerate overnight.

Making the almond milk

The next day, pour the almond, together with the water, into your blender container and blend on high speed until smooth, or until you get a milky texture.

Next, place a cheesecloth or a sturdy nut milk bag (nylon mesh bag) in a big bowl and pour the blended almond milk into it.  Hold the cheesecloth/bag closed at the top with one hand and squeeze out the almond milk into the bowl as dry as possible.

You're done!

The pulp can be used to make biscuits, breads and cookies (but, sorry the recipes will not be featured in this juicing site!)

Add flavoring

You can drink this highly nutritious and delicious milk on its own, or you might want to add some flavoring to it.  Here are some ideas, add amount according to your taste:

  • Cocoa or coffee powder

  • Raw honey

  • Maple syrup

  • Vanilla extract

If you're using this almond milk for your smoothies, you can leave out the flavoring as your smoothie would already be very tasty from your other ingredients.

Use your fresh almond milk within two days, to enjoy all the live nutrients.  When not in use store in an air-tight glass jar in the fridge.

Note:

You can use this same method to make other nut milks: cashew, brazil nut, hazel nut, pecan, etc.
