How can I lighten my smoothies?
by Jocelyn

My boys take cereals and a glass of milk for breakfast. I really like them to take a glass of juice as well but they have little room in their stomachs for that. So I've decided to combine the juice with their milk and give them smoothies instead.
However, the smoothies are just too heavy for them. How should I lighten the smoothie and still pack in the goodness of juice and milk in the mornings? Am I too ambitious?
From Sara:Hi Jocelyn, two questions in a row, wonderful !!
You might hate me for saying this, but cereal and milk are really unhealthy breakfast. This partly explains the
nose bleed in your sons. Cereal comes under the "fast food" category and they contain very high level of sugar and saturated fats. Contrary to what you may believe,
cow's milk can cause a host of other health problems.
See if you can gradually cut these out from their diet and introduce healthy smoothies to them instead. Check out my
smoothie recipes for kids. Also read about
nutrition that yours kids will need as they grow up.
If they had been drinking milk all these years, it's time to wean them and start them on yogurt (in their smoothies) daily. Cow's milk (if not organic) contains anti-biotics and would have wiped out the friendly bacteria in the gastro-intestines and may cause other digestive problems in future. Yogurt will start to flood their gastro-intestines with the good bacteria again and rebuild their health. This will also help their bodies to absorb nutrients better when you start giving them more fresh fruits and vegetables.
