Homemade dog food

by Dr Babs
(Lincoln, CA)

Since my 2-year old schnauzer was 8 weeks old, she has eaten only homemade dog food. I used to have to cut up the vegetables and potatoes. Since I've been juicing, I save the pulp in plastic containers in the freezer.

Once a month, when I make dog food, I combine the pulp of broccoli, carrots, and white potatoes in a mixture of ground beef, ground lamb, cooked brown rice, and eggs. I cook the whole thing for about an hour on low and store the mixture in plastic containers in the freezer. Voila, healthy dog food for the month. The best benefit is that she loves it!

Dogs, etc.
by: Anna

Dogs, by ANATOMY, are carnivores. However, they are not obligate carnivores like cats. The only difference between cats and dogs is that cats NEED meat to be alive and dogs do not.

However, being alive does not equate to thriving. A dogs body is designed to be a meat-eater.

1. Their teeth are sharp and well separated for tearing and rending flesh. They have no flat molars to grind plant matter.

2. A dog's saliva does not contain amylase, the first enzyme to begin digesting grain products.

3. A dog's intestinal track is very short, about half the length (in relation) to that of an herbivore's. They do not have the means to digest plants or grains enough to actually receive the most nutrition from them.

That being said, there's nothing WRONG with feeding vegetables to dogs, as long as it doesn't overcome the meat portion of their diet.

My only worry with the diet for the pup on this page is that with vegetables it is so difficult to do the math and make sure they are receiving all the right vitamins and minerals. Raw feeders generally feed a percentage of liver and other secreting organs for this purpose.

Time to do some research!

Dogs ARE Carnivores! See excerps From Wikipedia

Carnivore From Wikipedia,
carnivores.[2] Omnivores also consume both animal and non-animal food, and apart from the more general definition, there is no clearly defined ratio of plant to animal material that would distinguish a facultative carnivore from an omnivore, or an omnivore from a facultative herbivore, for that matter.[3] A carnivore that sits at the top of the foodchain is an apex predator.

Plants that capture and digest insects are called carnivorous plants. Similarly, fungi that capture microscopic animals are often called carnivorous fungi.

The word "carnivore" sometimes refers to the mammalian Order Carnivora, but this is somewhat misleading. Although many Carnivora fit the definition of being exclusively meat eaters, not all do. For example, most species of bears are omnivorous, except for the giant panda, which is almost exclusively herbivorous, and the carnivorous polar bear. In addition, many carnivorous species are not members of Carnivora.

[The diet of a hypercarnivore consists of more than 70% meat, that of a mesocarnivore 50-70%, and that of a hypocarnivore less than 30%, with the balance consisting of nonvertebrate foods, which may include fungi, fruits, and other plant material.

[edit] Characteristics of carnivoresCharacteristics commonly associated with carnivores include organs for capturing and disarticulating prey (teeth and claws serve these functions in many vertebrates) and status as a predator. In truth, these assumptions may be misleading, as some carnivores do not hunt and are scavengers (though most hunting carnivores will scavenge when the opportunity exists). Thus they do not have the characteristics associated with hunting carnivores. Carnivores have comparatively short digestive systems, as they are not required to break down tough cellulose found in plants. Carnivores will also generally possess eyes that face forward, affording binocular vision and depth perception necessary to pounce on prey, as contrasted to the usual herbivore arrangement of eyes set on opposite sides of the head, sacrificing binocular vision for a nearly 360 degree field of vision as a defense against predators.

Dogs AREN'T carnivores
by: Anonymous

In regards to Lee, dogs are NOT NOT NOT carnivores. Cats are carnivores and would not do well on a vegan diet but dogs can do great on a vegan diet!

Foods that can kill your pets
by: Lee

I have a Schnauzer also, I've had Schnauzers for over 50 years. Table scraps are fine to a degree, but we must remember they are carnivores and require a higher fat content. They require live enzymes, anything cooked over 112 degrees kills enzymes. Do not cook the Chop meat, feed it to them raw! Beef heart is excellent, as is raw chicken wings, (never cooked) they obtain calcium from the chicken wings in abundance which is great for their bones. I've obtained this information from a number of vet's. A raw meat diet is the number 1 food for dogs. They love any organ meat. There is a book out by a vet called "Give your dog a bone" and you can check with Skansen Kennel, this lady is an international dog judge, and has over 1000 awards to her kennel as she has been raising Schnauzers for over 50 years. www.skansenkennel.com I believe is the web address, you will find a contact number and more information the proper diet for a carnivor.

I pass this around to all my friends who have dogs as what NOT to feed them.
Keep this list handy and memorize it.

Feeding pets food that we enjoy is not only wrong, it can also be fatal.
There are some foodstuffs that humans relish which cause illness and death if eaten by pets.

Chocolate, Macadamian nuts and onions are good examples.
Each of these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly.

Foods that will kill your dog.

Avocado's
Onions
Garlic
Chocolate
Cocoa
Grapes
Raisins
Macadamian nuts

Other potential dangers
Pear pips
the kernels of plums
peaches and apricots
apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide posioning)
Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
Rhubarb leaves
Mouldy/spoiled foods
Alcohol
Yeast dough
Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
Hops (used in home brewing)
Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
Broccoli (in large amounts)
Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

As to how to prevent such poisonings, recognize that dogs are long on sweet tooth and short on judgement and and act accordingly. Do not leave tasty items lying around. Put sugar free gums and candies where dogs can't get at them. Keep chewable vitamins out of the way too. If you bake with Xylitol, store the resultant goodies well out of your pet's reach and do not hand-feed them bits of Xylitol-laced muffins as a treat no matter how much they beg.

Lee Lincoln
