Green juices & too much Vitamin K

by Jack Townsend
(Los Angeles, CA)

I juice mostly green leafy vegetables (kale, chard, collards, mustard greens) along with carrots to moderate the taste. I don't have any blood clotting problems but could I be creating a clotting problem for myself because of the high content of vitamin k in my juices? I usually have 8-12 ounces of juice every other day.

From Yegyan (guest author):

You should not have a problem with blood clotting problems. Unless there is another condition you are predisposed to, juicing the leafy greens you are describing will help the condition of your blood, not hurt it.

Vitamin K is a clotting vitamin
by: Anonymous

Definitely do not take in large amounts of Vitamin K while on a coumadin regime without consulting your doctor. They do counteract each other. However, the best practice, rather than avoiding Kale and other high-vitamin K plant juices altogether, is to get nutritional information on the precise amounts of the nutrients in say a 4oz serving. Chances are your doc will sign off on the juicing so long as you aren't getting mega doses.

response to possible green vegies and vit K
by: sagemkm

I wanted my husband 72 on many medications for heart problems to eat more green raw vegies, I was told by many practitioners that the vitamin K conflicts with coumadin or plavix which since he has a pacemaker and 3 stints they say he needs to be on to keep things from sticking to the stints etc. Vit k in greens is a clotting factor so I guess it depends on where you are in your life and how healthy you are.
