Dear Friend,
Our guest, natural weight loss expert and nutritionist Yegyan, answered some of my questions about juicing and weight loss.
In this issue, we will continue with the interview, followed by Yegyan answering some of the questions that you have asked. Yegyan has helped many of his diabetic clients get off glucose control medication. Today, our interview focus on the health imbalances in diabetes, with a juice recipe for detoxifying the liver.
Part 2 of the "Juicing for Health and Weight Loss" Series
JFH: In Part 1 of the interview, you said that there are health imbalances that prevent weight loss and that you use juicing to help heal those imbalances. Can you tell us more about this?
Yegyan:
I detail these seven imbalances in my book the Metabolism Makeover. And that by healing those imbalances, people who were not able to lose weight will be able to lose weight and keep it OFF. Some of these imbalances are caused by organs that are not properly functioning. These can be corrected with the right foods.
JFH: Can you please
give us an example of what you mean by healing an imbalance? Yegyan: Let’s take the example of diabetes. Diabetes is often associated with being overweight. Diabetes is also often attributed to insulin. When there is too much insulin being secreted in the blood, it will convert all glucose in the blood to fat.
What is blamed for too much insulin is refined sugar in the diet. The sugar gets turned into glucose, then insulin is released and it is able to take some of that glucose and drive it into the cells for fuel; but the cells will resist insulin when it has "had its fill". So that means there is this unused glucose in the blood.
Insulin will shun that out of the blood and convert it to body fat. Insulin is an important hormone because it is what causes nutrients to go inside the cells to feed it. If your cells become resistant to insulin, it will not allow insulin to go inside the cells to nourish it. This contributes to excess insulin.
If the cells become so insulin resistant, they just stop responding to insulin and do not allow nutrients to go inside the cells. A person with type 2 diabetes is actually starving to death despite eating a lot of food. The muscles have a diminished ability to receive nutrients. This is why as diabetes gets more severe, body parts end up being amputated. Lack of nutrition to the body part can cause a body part (especially the extremities) to die from the inside. Your pancreas is what releases insulin. It can get stressed to the point that it will just stop producing insulin. This is type 1 diabetes. In this case there is not enough insulin being produced so a person has to inject themselves with it. When it comes to diabetes, the two things to heal are: (1) the ability to secrete insulin properly and (2) the cells’ ability to use it.
Let us take the first case of not enough insulin being produced. The pancreas is an organ that can be damaged. It can get fatigued and stressed. It is also surrounded by fluids. If those fluids are toxic and corrosive, the cells that make up the pancreas can get damaged. By replacing the fluid around the pancreas with healthy fluids that contain nutrients and the toxic elements are removed, the cells of the pancreas can be allowed to heal on their own. Juicing with the right ingredients is very effective in doing this.
A liquid diet of raw foods take a tremendous stress off the bodily system and allows for a detoxification of the body fluids. When there is general illness, you will find the blood has lowered in its pH. Processed and cooked foods lower pH of the blood. Acid in the blood can damage the cells it comes in contact with. For insulin resistance, the same principle holds true but instead of the pancreas, it is the receptors on the cells themselves that have to heal. When you have someone yelling at you all the time, you can become deaf to that person. That is what can happen to the insulin receptors on the cells. They just start to ignore insulin.
Regulating the supply of insulin so it is more stable and not peaking and plunging, will help restore sensitivity, but mainly, the toxic substances in the fluids surrounding the cells need to be cleaned out. The cells will stop receiving nutrients if it believes doing so will cause more damage.
So giving the nervous system a break from concentrated sugars, toxins allows the cells to heal again. In very simple terms, often times, when you get out of the way and let the body do what it does best, you get healing!
In my book, the Metabolism Makeover delineates a list of toxic chemicals people are unaware of that are in the foods we eat, in the plastics we eat food from, on surfaces of the objects in our surroundings, etc. These chemicals place an enormous stress on the body and the nervous system.
Taking solids away from the diet and eating organic foods relieves the nervous system tremendously and facilitates your body’s natural and powerful and innate healing processes.
JFH: So,
juices have healing properties? Yegyan: Our body has an amazing and very powerful impulse to heal itself. It is like there is an inner force guiding the body. And that force has an intelligence.
The human body is very complex. There are many various systems and organs all with their own instructions and they work together like a symphony. The folly of most modern medicine is to take one organ and treat it as if it's a standalone. Modern medicine ignores the organ's relationship to its environment and how it is affected by and affects other organs and systems in the body. What is often overlooked in healing is to remove the barriers to healing.
They are not necessarily healing on their own, they provide nutrients directly to the cells and this strengthens them and assists in the natural impulse of the body to heal itself. But the biggest benefit is by reducing the amount of solids at least for a period of time. In western society it is normal to think about taking something to heal something. Someone has a headache, they take an aspirin. They have a sour stomach, they take an antacid. Because of this, it is easy to see the body as something that is dependent on external drugs and chemicals to heal.
The truth is that your body has an amazing power and ability to heal itself. All eastern philosophies and healing arts are based on this philosophy. When the healing ability of the body becomes blocked, chronic illness sets in. When those blockages are removed, the body will begin to heal because of its own intelligence to do so. This may be a new idea to some people. Healing arts like acupressure, acupuncture and chiropractic are based on this idea. They remove blockages of energy so that the body is ALLOWED to heal itself. So there are two things that juicing does, to allow healing to occur:
JFH: Can you give
us a juice recipe that heals a gland? Yegyan: The liver is a gland that takes a lot of abuse. Detoxifying your liver is such a helpful thing to speed up healing in your body. All hormones pass through your liver. If your liver is congested it alters the balance of these hormones and can create an imbalance of hormones.
When it comes to weight loss, there are hormones that burn fat and make your metabolism younger; and hormones that make your metabolism older and store fat on the body. A healthy, clean liver will help you have more anti-aging and fat burning hormones.
Here is a juice recipe that helps your liver heal and clean itself out:
Basic Detox With Beetroot* 5 – 6 stalks kale 1 - 2 apple (as needed for sweetness) 1 whole organic lemon (with the peel) 1 whole medium-sized beetroot* 1 head celery or 2 cucumbers 1 – 2 tablespoons fresh ginger.
*Beetroot helps clean and regenerate liver tissue. Kale is one of the most nutrient-packed of the cruciferous vegetables. (You can replace kale with Romaine lettuce). Cruciferous vegetables are all extremely cleansing and helpful to the liver. Even going on an intermittent fast and drinking this juice will give your liver a much needed clean-up.
