Dear Friend,

Recently a special friend from Down Under gave me two bags of fresh avocados that he picked from his garden.  Living in a tropical country, avocados are a rarity for me and they piqued my interest to learn more about this luscious fruit.

Avocados aren't just for guacamole, though I made dips and bread spread out of it.  I included them in my sandwiches, salad, in some dishes, and best of all, turned them into smoothie.  They were delicious and I find them really an easy fruit to eat and very versatile.

As I study the fruit I understood how my friend at his (middle) age has very good health reports.  Here are only some of the health benefits of avocados:

Blood pressure: The high potassium and folate content in avocado helps to regulate blood pressure, protecting your body against circulatory diseases, heart problems and stroke.

Cholesterol: An avocado contains oleic and linoleic acids that are effective in lowering the LDL cholesterol and increasing the healthy HDL cholesterol.

Eyesight: The potent anti-oxidant content in avocado helps neutralize free radicals that are important for improving eyesight and prevent eye problems like astigmatism, cataracts and glaucoma.

Increases absorption of phytonutrients: Studies have proven that when even a small amount of avocado is consumed together with other fruits and vegetables, the absorption of phytonutrients are a few times higher than when consumed on its own. This alone makes it worthwhile to be eating avocados regularly.

Muscle and nerve: The high potassium content helps balance our body's electrolytes, aids muscle activity, nerve function and energy metabolism.

Psoriasis: The avocado oil is beneficial in the treatment of psoriasis. Apply regularly on affected parts to remove the scales.

RECIPE: AVOCADO SLUSHIE

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of yogurt (or vanilla ice-cream)

  • 1/2 cup of milk of choice (e.g. goat's milk, almond milk, etc.)
or 1/2 cup of any fruit juice

  • 1 medium sized ripe avocado, cubed

  • 1 small ripe banana, sliced thickly

  • A pinch of cardamom powder

  • A squeeze of lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp raw honey or molasses (omit if using ice-cream and/or fruit juice)

(The above are just a suggestion.  You may use whatever ingredients you have available.  Some other ingredients are tofu, jam, peanut butter, nuts, spirulina powder, etc.)

Put all the above into a blender and blend till you have the desired consistency.  Enjoy!
