This issue, let's look at the many health benefits of a BITTER MELON (a.k.a. BITTER GOURD)

Not many people would consider eating bitter melons, let alone drinking its juice!

I was recently intrigued with a friend using bitter melon juice as one of the ingredients in her detox program.  So I set out to research on this vegetable-fruit.

What I found about its medicinal benefits was exciting.  I tried the bitter melon juice, very bitter, but hey, what is the bitter taste compared to its vast medicinal values?  I'll show you below, how we can improvise on the taste.

Let's get YOU interested on the health benefits of bitter gourds too!!  It's not as bad as you'd think!
(Tip: Try eating it first, before trying the juice).

Here are some highlights of its many health benefits:

Diabetes mellitus:  Bitter melon contains an outstanding hypoglycemic compound (a plant insulin) that is highly beneficial in lowering sugar levels in blood and urine.  Bitter melon juice has been shown to significantly improve glucose tolerance without increasing blood insulin levels.

Energy:  Regular consumption of bitter gourd juice has been proven to improve energy and stamina level.  Even sleeping patterns have been shown to be improved/stabilized.

Eye problems:  The high beta-carotene and other properties in bitter gourd make it one of the finest vegetable-fruit that help alleviate eye problems and improving eyesight.

Hangover:  Bitter melon juice may be beneficial in the treatment of a hangover for its alcohol intoxication properties.  It also help cleanse and repair and nourish liver problems due to alcohol consumption.

Toxemia:  Bitter gourd contains beneficial properties that cleanses the blood from toxins.  Sip two teaspoonfuls of the juice daily to help cleanse the liver.  Also helpful in ridding jaundice for the same reasons.

NUTRITION HIGHLIGHT: BITTER GOURD

An outstanding phyto-compound in bitter melon called charantin has long been used as anti-diabetic.  It has a hypoglycemic effect that significantly lower the sugar level in blood and urine.

This bitter vegetable-fruit also contains polypeptide P which has been proven to achieve a positive sugar-regulating effect by suppressing the neural response to sweet taste stimuli.

HEALTHFUL JUICER RECIPE USING BITTER MELON

I must warn you that bitter melon juice would be highly concentrated in its bitterness.  It is potent, so do not consume more than two ounces in a day.  But, think about the goodness and significant effect it can help, if you have a diabetic or toxemia condition.  Or if you simply want to detox ...

Bitter Better Juice

- Cut a medium-sized (large variety, less bitter) bitter melon length-wise, use only half

- Core and cut-up an apple (use a green apple if diabetic)

- You can also use a carrot/pineapple, or any other sweet fruits in place of apple, or even honey, to counter the bitterness (if not diabetic)

- A few mint leaves

Juice all these together and drink fresh.  You can reduce the bitterness by soaking the cut melon in salt water for about 30 minutes before juicing/cooking.

JUICY TIP:

Whatever you juice, you can always save the pulp, do not throw away after juicing.  Pulp can be used to thicken soup, or used as flavoring agents in stew or even to be added into cakes like carrot cake or apple pie.  Save the pulp in sandwich bags, date them and pop them into the freezer for future use.  If you run out of ideas, simply bury the pulp around your plants in the garden as fertilizer!
